What's Muscatine Like?

Muscatine is a picturesque riverboat town on the Mississippi River near the Iowa-Illinois border.  In the 1850's, author Mark Twain, then Samuel Clemens, lived in Muscatine.  He contributed to The Muscatine Journal and later wrote of the city:

"I remember Muscatine -- still more pleasantly -- for its summer sunsets.  I have never seen any, on either side of the ocean, that equaled them."

The beauty that Mark Twain appreciated in Muscatine many years ago has only grown with time.  Muscatine is now home to countless local treasures, including:

  • More than 30 parks and recreation areas
  • Several miles of riverfront pedestrian and bike paths
  • Muscatine Aquatic Center
  • Muscatine History and Industry Museum
  • Muscatine Art Center
  • Pine Creek Grist Mill

Muscatine also hosts several community events throughout the summer months of your internship.  The Muscatine County Fair, Independence Day parade and fireworks, and Great River Days celebration will keep you busy!  Learn more about attractions and events in Muscatine by visiting the link below:

With a population of about 23,000, Muscatine maintains its small-town charn, yet has quick access to metropolitan areas.  The Quad Cities are located just 25 minutes northeast of Muscatine, and the Iowa City/Coralville area is located about 40 minutes northwest of Muscatine.  Both areas offer exciting attractions and events that you can explore throughout your time in the area.  Discover more by clicking the links below:

InternsFrequently Asked Questions

What basic requirements do you look for in internship candidates?
In most cases, interns working for HNI and its operating companies have completed two or three years of college education and are in good academic standing.  Our ideal internship candidate has been actively involved on campus and may have had previous relevant work experience.  In addition, a healthy dose of enthusiasm, a strong work ethic, and a willingness to learn and grow are necessary for a successful internship experience.

How does your selection process work?
You'll probably first seek an internship with HNI through your university's career fair or by submitting your application through our careers Web site.  After reviewing candidates, we may invite you to interview on-campus or on-site at HNI Corporate Headquarters or at one of HNI's operating company locations.  If you're successful through this initial evaluation, you will be invited to a final interview for a specific position at an HNI location.  When you successfully complete this second interview, you will be given a job offer and become an HNI intern upon the satisfactory completion of a drug screen and background check.

I'm an international student.  Can I apply?
We encourage international students to apply.  You must be eligible to work in the United States.  At the time of hire, you must have a copy of a valid visa and a United States Social Security card.  We have hosted many international students in past internships, and we enjoy their active involvement in the HNI Internship Program.

I'm not from Muscatine!  Where will I live?
If you need housing in the Muscatine area during the summer, you may be eligible to use HNI-sponsored housing free of charge.  You can speak to an HNI recruiter about your eligibility.  HNI-sponsored housing arrangements are through Muscatine Community College Student Apartments.  You can follow the link below to find more information about living arrangements and see a layout of apartment design: Muscatine Community College Student Apartments

Can I get academic credit for my internship?
Check with an academic advisor at your university to determine whether academic credit is available and beneficial in your case.  If it's a good option for you, we will encourage and facilitate the use of your internship for academic credit.
