About Muscatine

Muscatine is a picturesque riverboat town located on the Mississippi River near the Iowa-Illinois border.  In the early 1850's, author Mark Twain, then known as Samuel Clemens, made his home in Muscatine and contributed to The Muscatine Journal.  Twain later wrote of the city:

"I remember Muscatine -- still more pleasantly -- for its summer sunsets.  I have never seen any, on either side of the ocean, that equaled them."

The beauty that Mark Twain appreciated in Muscatine many years ago has only grown with time.  Muscatine is now home to countless local treasures, including:

  • More than 30 parks and recreation areas
  • Several miles of riverfront pedestrian and bike paths
  • Dozens of lovely historic homes
  • Muscatine Aquatic Center
  • Muscatine History and Industry Museum
  • Muscatine Art Gallery
  • Pine Creek Grist Mill

Muscatine also hosts community events throughout the year:

  • In January, the Eagles and Ivories/Ragtime Weekend celebrates bald eagle watching on the Mississippi River and the legacy of ragtime music.
  • Memorial Day weekend kicks off summer with the Melon City Criterium, an annual bike race through Muscatine's Weed Park.
  • Great River Days, a three-day celebration on the last weekend in July, highlights the history of Muscatine and offers entertainment, music, food, activities for children, crafts, and more.
  • Heritage Days and the Buckskinners Rendezvous in late September recreates the era of pioneers and fur traders through storytelling, historic tours, homemade ice cream, and apple cider.
  • Holiday Stroll Weekend in December brings thousands of visitors to Muscatine to admire beautiful downtown store window displays, enjoy trolley rides, watch the Nutcracker ballet, and celebrate the holiday season.
